The Wildebeest Migration - An Introduction
The annual wildebeest migration is arguably the Africa's most spectacular wildlife event. It is known as the greatest show on earth, and with good reason! What could be more spectacular than thousands upon thousands of wildebeest and zebra thundering their way across the plains of the Serengeti and Masai Mara in an annual cycle of life and death?
The African Wildebeest migration is a continuous occurrence, with herds generally moving in a clockwise direction throughout the Serengeti and Masai Mara ecosystem. Various stages of the Wildebeest Migration provide distinctly different experiences – from the vast herds grazing sedately in the Serengeti, to the calving season which invariably attracts an array of cheetah, hyena and lion lurking on the fringe waiting to prey on the vulnerable newborns, and to the thrilling river-crossing where toothy crocodiles lie in wait for the herds on the Mara River in the North.
