Serengeti Weather and Climate

In general, the Serengeti experiences pleasantly moderate weather making it a great year-round safari destination. Part of the Northern Safari circuit, the Serengeti sits at a higher altitude which means the weather and humidity remain mostly mild despite it being just south of the equator.

Like much of Tanzania, the Serengeti experiences a Dry Season and a Wet Season:

Dry Season

From June to October, the Serengeti goes through its Dry Season. During this time, the weather is cooler but the days are still warm. This is also the best time for game viewing as the vegetation is dried out and sparse and wildlife gathers around communal water sources in search of hydration creating great opportunities to view the abundant animal life. Early morning game drives can become chilly so be sure to pack a few warm items of clothing if you are visiting the Serengeti during the Dry Season.

June to October sees an exciting stage of the Great Migration in the Serengeti. In June/July, hundreds of thousands of wildebeest, zebra and an array of buck make a dangerous crossing at the Grumeti River.

The Serengeti also experiences a ‘Short Dry Season’ from January to February. Following the ‘Short Rains’ the land is lush and green. This is a great time for bird viewing in the Serengeti and across Tanzania. January to March sees another important stage of the Great Migration take place in the Serengeti as Calving Season is underway during this time.

Wet Season

The Wet Season, or ‘Long Rains’, occurs from March to May. These are the wettest months and safari low season.  During the Wet Season, thunderstorms are frequent and the humidity and heat are uncomfortably high. The Serengeti experiences ‘Short Rains’ during November and December. The short rains are often unpredictable but it is rare for it to rain throughout the day.
