When is the best safari season to visit Katavi?
Katavi National Park is located in the west of Tanzania, near Lake Tanganyika. Comprising mostly of open grasslands and miombo woodlands, the landscape is carved out by two major rivers whose seasonal flooding creates sprawling floodplains that attract a multitude of species.
Wildlife viewing in Katavi National Park is dependant on the seasons. The rainy season sees the rivers in full flood, and the shallow pans filling with water. This abundance of water causes the wildlife to disperse and the mosquitoes come out in full force. We wouldn't recommend visiting Katavi at this time of year.
For a truly exceptional experience of this untamed corner of Tanzania, we recommend the best time to visit is during the dry season, when water is scarce and the animals are forced to congregate around any remaining water sources.
