KwaZulu Natal Safaris
KwaZulu Natal is a kaleidoscope of cultures, landscapes and experiences, and is one of the best places to combine sun soaked beach vacations with the excitement of an African safari. A truly diverse province, KwaZulu Natal is rich in varied habitats and the sub-tropical climate ensures plenty of lush vegetation alongside coastal dune forests and open bushveld that support an abundance of wildlife. The province is home to some of the finest game parks in South Africa, ranging from small reserves along the coast to Big 5 reserves found inland. Couple that with the region's low risk of malaria and you have the makings of the perfect safari destination.
We have divided the KwaZulu Natal safari regions into 3 separate areas, all offering slightly different benefits.
KwaZulu Natal's Elephant Coast
Stretching up to Mozambique, KwaZulu Natal's Elephant Coast is home to the St Lucia Wetlands Park. Declared a world heritage site, the park comprises 328 000 hectares of wonderful scenery and 280 km of pristine coastline, which offers some of the best scuba diving and snorkelling in South Africa. The unspoiled wetlands are home to a multitude of marine species, including humpback whales, dolphins, and turtles.
Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game Reserve
Set in the heart of Zululand the Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game Reserve is the oldest game park in Africa. Covering some 96 000 hectares, the game reserve contains an immense diversity of flora and fauna and is home to Africa's Big-5 (elephant, rhino, leopard, buffalo and lion), along with other game such as the cheetah, wild dog and nyala. Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game Reserve is world-renowned as one of the great African sanctuaries for the critically endangered rhino, and due to its conservation efforts the park now has the largest population of white rhino in the world.
Phinda Game Reserve
Situated between the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park and the blue waters of the Indian Ocean, Phinda Game Reserve spans seven distinct habitats which shelter an abundance of wildlife including the famed Big 5 and more than 400 species of bird. Phinda offers the perfect bush and beach adventure.
