Durban and surrounds 365

The largest and busiest port city on the African continent, Durban is a busy gateway to the province. Flanked by the warm Indian Ocean, it’s a balmy city with lush subtropical vegetation and a big beachgoing and watersports culture.

Home to the largest Indian community outside Asia, Durban has an eclectic background which also includes Zulu and European influences – all of which reflect in its cuisine and arts cultures. The Durban promenade is a focal point – here you’ll see traditional Zulu and African dancing, rickshaw pullers, and vibrant scented spice markets. South Africa’s answer to ‘Miami Beach’, the Durban beachfront is a busy gathering point.

Attractions like uShaka Marine World (Africa’s largest marine park), and the warm water and beachgoing culture, make Durban a very child- and family-friendly destination. We usually recommend Durban for a night or two, before venturing in to explore the rest of the province.
