Durban is the gateway to KwaZulu Natal, and the largest and busiest port city on the African continent. It is rich in lush subtropical vegetation and bordered by the warm Indian Ocean. The city enjoys a balmy tropical climate (especially in the winter months whilst the rest of South Africa is experiencing winter conditions). Travelling around Durban you can see the splendour and grandeur that was, but sadly, much of the city is in need of some refurbishment.
A holiday to Durban will features an eclectic mix, including colonial European, Zulu and Indian (the largest Indian community outside of Asia). The Durban promenade is a focal point, here you'll be exposed to traditional Zulu and African dancing, Rickshaw pullers in their brightly colored attire, and extensive markets where spices and incense rent the air. The beachfront is a vibrant part of the city, and is often referred to as South Africa's Miami Beach. The sunny climate combined with a wealth of facilities, makes it a watersports paradise.
No holiday to Durban is complete without a visit to uShaka Marine World - Africa's largest marine park and great for all ages. Spanning over 15 hectares, uShaka Marine World is an entertainment wonderland with ocean activities, rides, oceanarium, amusement park, shopping, restaurants and lots more.
We usually recommend Durban for a night or 2 before exploring the rest of the province of KwaZulu Natal. It can easily be combined with a trip to the historic Battlefields & The Zulu Kingdom, the spectacular Drakensberg and Midlands, or a wildlife safari.
