Alternate Activities in the Cape Winelands
The Cape Winelands are at the heart of wine production in South Africa. This beautiful section of the country is a scenic getaway for wine enthusiasts. However, the scenic vineyards, historic cellars and award-winning wine are not the only attractions in this area.
While experiencing the wine culture in the Winelands is one of the main reasons to visit the area, there are a number of alternate activities to excite visitors to the Winelands. The towns of Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl are home to an array of restaurants filled with culinary delights. There are also a number of museums and heritage spots. We have listed some great activities below.
History & Culture:
Huguenot Memorial Museum
Located at the end of Franschhoek’s main road is the beautiful Huguenot Memorial. The monument and the neighboring museum pay homage to the town’s 300-year French Huguenot history. Learn more while exploring the museum before relaxing in the beautiful gardens.
Franschhoek Motor Musuem

The Taalmonument sits on a hill overlooking Paarl offering panoramic views. The monument and museum were built to celebrate the Afrikaans language. Visit to learn more about Afrikaans and to take in some spectacular views.
Food and Markets:
Located en route to Paarl is a lovely destination called Spice Route. The restored farm house complex is home to a number of artisans including a brewing company and glassmakers. Enjoy delicious meals, local wine and beer tastings and shop for local crafts.
Huguenot Fine Chocolate
On Franschhoek’s main street sits a haven for chocolate lovers. Enjoy small-group chocolate tastings, chocolate-making demonstrations and a history of the shop and chocolate. Don’t forget to indulge in a few treats!
Root 44 Market
The Root 44 Market in Stellenbosch is a popular destination for families. Open every weekend no matter the weather, visit Rot44 to enjoy delicious food and sweet treats, shop for hidden gems at the market stalls and sing along to the love entertainment.
There are a number of nature reserves that offer day hiking trails including Mont Rochelle Nature Reserve and Jonkershoek Nature Reserve. Take in the scenic natural beauty of the surrounding mountains and fynbos. Permits may be required – check with local tourism info centers.

Fun for the whole family – jump onto a specially designed motorized scooters and experience the magnificent wine farms and surrounds of Franschhoek and Stellenbosch.
