Maputo and Inhaca Island 365
Once known as Lourenço Marques, the capital of Mozambique, Maputo is a thriving African harbour city in the south of the country with a strong Portuguese heritage.
While the country has restabilised politically, the capital still shows signs of disrepair and you’ll see a contrast between new, modern high-rise buildings and run-down apartment blocks – a city in transition. A short stopover here on your way to your next destination is worth doing. While there, factor in a visit to the fort of Nossa Senhora da Conceicao, the vibrant markets, and the many restaurants and bars where you can sample local seafood and beer (which Mozambique is known for).
Inhaca is a small island just off the coast of Maputo – easily reached by boat or ferry. Popular for snorkeling and diving, the island is also a popular port of call for yachts, sailing boats and cruise ships. Like all of Mozambique’s islands, Inhaca offers lush vegetation, excellent beaches, warm tropical waters and spectacular coral reefs.
