Bazaruto Archipelago 365
The Bazaruto Archipelago is a five-island haven of idyllic tropical perfection. Fringed with powdery beaches and surrounded by the warm Indian Ocean, the Bazaruto islands are easily accessible from the seaside town of Vilanculos on the Mozambique mainland – known as the gateway to the archipelago, and a short two-hour flight from Johannesburg.
The two largest islands are Benguerra and Bazaruto Island – which are also the most developed for tourism, evident in the handful of small boutique lodges on offer. Bazaruto Island is surrounded by a pristine marine reserve, and offers some of the world’s best snorkeling and scuba diving in and around Two Mile Reef.
This group of islands is a watersports haven – from scuba diving or snorkeling and big-game fishing, to sailing and windsurfing. If you prefer to stay on the shore you can relax on the postcard-perfect beaches, or take in the scenery from horseback.
