Mount Kilimanjaro Climb on the Machame Route
Embark on an unforgettable Kilimanjaro tour with Safari365 and summit the highest mountain on the African continent (Mount Kilimanjaro) via the scenic Machame Route.
Day 1 - 2: Moshi Kilimanjaro, Tanzania
Upon your arrival at Kilimanjaro International, will you be met and transferred to your hotel in Moshi, set on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro - Africa's tallest freestanding mountain.
Day 2 - 3: Machame Gate
Machame Gate is considered the most beautiful route up Kilimanjaro. The Machame Route offers the adventurous hiker a stunning slide show. Your Kilimanjaro tour starts from Machame Gate (1800m) after a short walk through the attractive banana and coffee farms of Machame village. The route follows a ridge through dense montane forest. This is the richest forested area on the mountain and also the zone from where 96% of the water on Kilimanjaro originates. We have a welcome lunch stop at ‘halfway clearing', a small opening in the trees, and then continue climbing steadily. The gradient becomes gentler as the forest slowly merges into giant heather, close to the next camp near the ruins of Machame(3,000 m). We may get our first closer look at the glaciated dome of Kibo, if the evening clouds permit (6-8 hours walking).
Day 3 - 4: Machame, Shira Camp
You rise early and after breakfast, your Kilimanjaro tour continues by climbing up a steep ridge to reach a small semicircular cliff known as Picnic Rock. Here, you may enjoy excellent views of Kibo and the jagged rim of Shira Plateau. The trail continues less steeply to reach the Shira Plateau. We camp near Shira Cave (3,720 m.) which has some of the most stunning views of Kilimanjaro. (4-6 hours walking).
Day 4 - 5: Shira, Barranco Valley
A morning of gentle ascent and panoramic views, leaving the moorland plateau behind to walk on lava ridges beneath the glaciers of the Western Breach. The route now turns east into a semi desert and rocky landscape surrounding Lava Tower. Lunch is served in near the Lava Tower junction (4,550 m) we descend to the bottom of the Great Barranco Valley (3,900 m), sheltered by towering cliffs, with extensive views of the plains far below. Here the true acclimatisation benefit of this day becomes clear and you will have the opportunity to take some beautiful photos of the Western Breach and Breach Wall (5-7 hours walking).
Day 5 - 6: Heim Glacier
After spending a night at the Great Barranco Wall, you make your way up this awesome looking obstacle. Topping out just below the Heim Glacier, you will now appreciate just how beautiful Kilimanjaro really is. Your Kilimanjaro tour continues as you head across intervening ridges and valleys to the Karanga Valley (4 -5 hours walking).
Day 6 - 7: Barranco Wall
Today Your Kilimanjaro tour continues with a steep climb up the Barranco Wall leading to an undulating trail on the southeastern flank of Kibo. Here you will enjoy superb vistas of the Kilimanjaro's ice fields - an equatorial anomaly. Lunch is usually taken at Karanga, the last water point, in a steep valley. After lunch, we continue trekking, following the lava ridge. The temperature will grow colder and landscapes more sparse as we climb steeply to reach the Barafu campsite (4,600 m.) by mid afternoon. The remainder of the day is spent resting in preparation for the final ascent, before a very early night (6-8 hours walking).
Day 7 - 8: Uhuru Peak
Just after midnight you start a challenging trek by torchlight. You will head in a north-westerly direction and ascend through heavy scree towards Stella Point on the crater rim. A steady pace will take you to Stella Point (5,735m) in about five to six hours. Here you will stop for a short rest and be rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise you are ever likely to see. From Stella Point you continue on a two hour ascent to Uhuru Peak (5,896m), passing close to the spectacular glaciers and ice cliffs that still occupy most of the summit area. Head back to Barafu Camp and have a well deserved rest, before descending down the rock and scree path into moorland and eventually into the Mweka forest, reaching your final campsite. (11-15 hours walking).
Day 8 - 9: Moshi town centre
After an early breakfast, you descend on a three hour scenic hike through lovely forest with lush undergrowth to the national park gate at Mweka. There will be a vehicle waiting to meet you and transfer you back to your hotel based in Moshi town centre.
Day 9 : Kilimanjaro Internatinal Airport
Today your Kilimanjaro tour comes to an end as you are transferred to Kilimanjaro Airport for your departure flight home.
