An excellent trip in Rwanda

Dear 365, We got back home last Sunday but it has been a hectic week back at work. Our trip with Primate Safaris gorilla trekking went extremely well. They were very apologetic about the misunderstanding about lunch on the Friday and our designated driver/guide, Eric, arrived at 1 pm with Bernard, one of the managers, who gave us our pre-departure briefing there at our hotel, to save us time; he also arranged for someone from the company to come and fetch him separately so that we did not have to take the detour to drop him off. The vehicle was more than roomy enough for all of us, even when we had Cecile, our park guide with us. She was excellent, as we had read. We arrived well in time for a late afternoon 1 hour game drive before dark and saw, amongst others, a fish eagle with a fresh catch in a tree over the road and then two bull elephants that had had a swim and were now taking a dust bath, immediately next to the road. For the night we dropped the tent sides to keep only the mosquito netting and were kept awake for large parts by hippos crashing around. By 5 am we were all out onto the deck where four hippos were snorting away right next to us. We watched sunrise over the lake and had breakfast while vervets occasionally bombed us with fruit from the tree above and Eric was there before 7 am for the game drive. We saw a lot. Eric got us back to the King Faisal hospital guest house before 3 pm where we could prepare for our return flight. The hospital did not want any payment for using their facility, so we left a donation for their children's Christmas fund. All in all we had an excellent trip. For the guys who are new to Africa it was amazing. For me, a slightly more experienced traveler, the Ruzizi experience has been one of the best lodges I have ever been to. Thank you very much for all your help in arranging this safari. It was much appreciated. I will publish a modified version of this letter on my Africa travel blog http://fanusdreyerrdtf2009.blogspot.co.uk with pictures and some video. Kind regards and thanks again, on behalf of all of us. Fanus
