From the moment Theo from Ilios met us at the airport in Johannesburg to the sad moment we left that same airport 2 weeks later, all 10 of us agree, it was a wonderful time. The accommodation chosen for our age groups was perfect. Protea Hotel with its swimming pools, room to relax and play cards, fabulous breakfast and central position was a great introduction. Simbavati Lodge also suited us all. Swimming pool. Activities for the children and animals wandering past all the time. The food was superb, the staff excellent and the staff singing and dancing was a special treat. One of our party reacted adversely to his malaria medication and the staff couldn’t have been more helpful. Radisson RED in Cape Town suited us extremely well. We loved the funkiness and its great position close to food, shops and excellent entertainment. Again, a great choice for the various ages of our family. Ilios were prompt and efficient with clean buses, supplied us with bottled water daily and the guides were knowledgeable and caring in every instance. We always felt safe. The internal flights were good; flying low enough to observe the fascinating country beneath us. The two days in Johannesburg were well spent. Theo showed us Johannesburg and understood we were interested in Nelson Mandela so focused on his story, showing us where he lived when he was president and later. Our pleasant lunch in Soweto was interrupted by an amazing group of four young men singing in beautiful harmony to us. The cave and museum on our second day were educational and fun. Both trips allowing us time to do our own exploring in the evening. Our time spent at Simbavati Lodge was so fantastic. Robyn & Nick whisked us away as soon as we arrived and showed us more than we thought possible. What a wonderful experience for us all. The staff at the Lodge were happy, knowledgeable and helpful, even putting on a surprise birthday party for my husband! Bishop in particular was great. We enjoyed the beautiful drive to Hippo Hollow. There was nowhere for lunch until 3pm. Fortunately Simbavati had packed a little bag each with an apple, water & a KitKat so that served as lunch until we reached Hippo Hollow where we could get hamburgers for the children before they enjoyed a swim. They even have a resident pair of peacocks and the male provided us with a magnificent display after breakfast! Out of the bush to Cape Town and a couple of days touring around. The first day was interesting and our driver took us to places members of our party wanted to see. The cable car had been closed for 5 days because of poor weather so because of long queues, our guide started early the next morning and took us there before our full day down to the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve. Well worth it but it made it a long day for some. Finishing at the beautiful Kirstenbosch gardens was a lovely finish to our whirlwind tour of beautiful South Africa. An extra day would have been good (but not possible) with a day off between the two Cape Town tours. Thank you to our consultant Danielle for meeting us in Cape Town. Also thank you for the gifts. The wine is resting in readiness for a special occasion. The children’s xylophones came through Australian customs and will always be a happy reminder of their holiday in South Africa. Thank you Danielle for all the work you put in, our many requests and questions were attended to promptly and efficiently. I am so pleased, the whole family had a taster of South Africa and travel. We spent a wonderful time together with fabulous experiences and memories. We all learnt much without feeling we were learning. I can’t thank Danielle enough for her input. I was much happier to organize this with someone who lives there rather than deal with a travel agent here or go on a prepackaged tour. It certainly lived up to our expectations and exceeded mine by miles!
