Your Guide: Tanzania for Families

If you have a safari bucket-list chances are a trip to Tanzania will feature high up on that list.

Tanzania is a fantastic safari destination with a number of iconic spots to visit. A great thing about Tanzania is that along with offering traveler’s world-class safari experiences, it is also an incredible vacation destination for families with a sense of adventure.

Tanzania has it all; abundant wildlife, exciting safari activities, breathtaking landscapes, vibrant culture, and ancient history. From the bush to the beach; it is bursting with chances for the whole family to learn and discover.

Two main things to consider are what locations to visit and what type of accommodation to book:

Where to Go:

Picking a safari destination can be tricky purely because Tanzania has so many great things to see and do! You also need to make sure the destinations  are of interest to a range of ages. The country is split into two; the Northern Safari Circuit and the Southern Safari Circuit.

The Northern Circuit is home to iconic safari spots including the Serengeti, Tarangire National Park, Lake Manyara, and the Ngorongoro Crater to list a few – and is incredibly popular for travelers seeking a wildlife filled safari.  Seeing the best of this circuit does require long travel times but there are a number of destinations which means a lengthy drive can easily be broken up with exciting stops. The north offers guaranteed wildlife sightings and boasts having the Big 5. This makes for a great bucket-list safari destination for all ages.

The Southern Circuit sees fewer visitors than its neighbor in the north as the parks are far more remote. In the south, you will find the vast Selous Game Reserve, beautiful Ruaha National Park, and Mahale National Park which is well known for its population of habituated chimpanzees. The south is great for older children as there is an array of safari activities on offer. Please make sure to take note of the minimum age for different activities. From game drives to water based safaris; a safari to the south will create adventure filed memories.

Another highlight about visiting Tanzania is that a safari trip can easily be combined with a beach vacation. Nearby Zanzibar is the perfect add on to a Tanzania safari adventure. The whole family can relax, explore and experience Zanzibar’s history and culture.

Where to Stay:

Families traveling with young children need to make sure that selected accommodation is child friendly. Some lodges do not allow children due to safety concerns. In general, the north has a higher number of larger camps, lodges and hotel-like properties while the south has smaller lodges and camps.

Certain places have interactive kids programs. Lemala Camps offer a Lemala Cubs program, &Beyond has a WILDChild program and Four Seaons Safari Lodge in the Serengeti has a Kijana Kids Club. Lodges offering kids programs aim to help kids - younger and older - discover and learn more about Africa.

Things to Do:

  • Experience wildlife wonder across the Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Crater, Selous and more...
  • Spend some time soaking up local Maasai culture during a village visit
  • Go back millions of years with a trip to Olduvai Gorge. Near to the Ngorongoro Crater, Olduvai is famous for being the site of Louis and Mary Leaky’s archaeological and paleontological discoveries of early human ancestors.
  • Indulge in some relaxation and fun on the beaches of Zanzibar.
