A Day on the Franschhoek Wine Tram
A patchwork of vineyards spread out around the tram as it trundled through the sundrenched Franschhoek Wine Valley. It was a beautiful day, growing steadily warmer as the sun reached its midday peak. The passengers on board shared excited smiles as the tram pulled up to one of the valley’s beautiful wine estates.
The quaint town of Franschhoek is nestled at the base of a sprawling mountain range. Located in the heart of the Cape Winelands, and home to numerous wine estates, wineries and cellars, Franschhoek is a picturesque haven for wine enthusiasts.
Exploring the winelands is a must-do activity for wine lovers. One of the most unique, fun and convenient ways to do this is by using the Franschhoek Wine Tram. Recently, a few members of the Safari365 team had the opportunity to take a trip on the wine tram and experience some of Franschhoek’s most prestigious and most beautiful wine estates.
The wine tram is made up of several lines which travel through two different regions of the Franschhoek Wine Valley. There are six different tour options: the orange, purple, blue, green, red and yellow lines which visit 22 wine cellars and estates in total. The tour starts in Franschhoek at the Wine Tram office. Visitors are then transported via a tram inspired bus to one of the trams or by bus to the first stop. A combination of open-side trams and open air tram busses are used, due to ease of access to some of the wine estates.
The Safari365 team had the opportunity to explore Noble Hill and Vrede en Lust wine estates during their trip on the Purple Line.
The tour is a “hop-on hop-off” style meaning travelers can take their pick of destinations and visit them I a flexible and convenient manner. At the different stops, and depending on the destination, wine tram travelers can enjoy wine tastings, lunches or dinners, cellar tours and walks through the grounds. If anyone is having trouble deciding on where to go and what to include, helpful attendants and conductors are on hand on the trams to guide and inform travelers on the best destinations specific to their interests.
Situated only an hour’s drive from Cape Town, it is a convenient day trip from the city. Franschhoek also boasts fantastic accommodation, gourmet food destinations as well as numerous fun activities making is great for longer stays too.
During a visit to Franschhoek, exploring the beautiful vineyards and sampling the award-winning wines is a highlight for many visitors and the wine tram is a unique and leisurely way to experience the delights of the valley.
