After recently viewing the Great Migration in East Africa, and experiencing the “smorgasboard” of game in the Ngorongoro Crater, I felt it was time to re-visit the Private Reserves that border the Kruger National Park, and check out the claim from the Camps and Lodges, that “they can almost guarantee Big-5 sightings in 2-3 days”!
Kerry and myself had the good fortune to stay in the Timbavati, Kapama and Sabi Sands Reserves and can honestly say that this was true for me - what I had forgotten was how up close & personal you can get to the Big-5, without the traffic.
To see 5 (yes five!!) Rhino, a mother with her three daughters and another female rhino, almost nudging the vehicle was amazing. And not long after we watched a large male Elephant play games with our tracker sitting on the bonnet seat of the 4X4, which was very special. Yes, we did see lion, leopard and buffalo, in fact a heard of buffalo in a watering hole been chased out by the Hippos.
So if time is of the essence, take a short flight from Johannesburg to the Private Reserves in the Kruger to experience the Big-5
