Safari365 Best in African Travel for 2019

Drawing up a travel wish list can be a daunting task – with so many beautiful destinations across the globe, how do you decide where to go? What are the best places to travel in 2019? Looking at popular destinations and travel trends is a great way to start narrowing down your choices.

In 2018, travelers were out in search of authentic experiences.

They were looking for something different and unique to specific destinations. This search for authenticity is due to travelers these days valuing authentic experiences far more than material possessions. It is the pursuit of a feeling of wonder; a quest for memories that will remain long after returning home.

Travelers seeking authenticity is a trend that looks to be even more popular in 2019. Travelers will also be looking to explore unchartered territories, enjoy digital detoxes, and travel sustainably.

With a wealth of wildlife, rich culture and history, off-the-beaten track destinations, remote wildernesses, ecofriendly getaways and unforgettable experiences on offer, Africa is the perfect place for authentic adventure. Lonely Planet has even listed Zimbabwe – home of the magnificent Victoria Falls – in their top three countries to visit in 2019.

We strongly believe Africa should be at the top of your travel bucket list!

The continent is as vast and varied as it is beautiful and will have you itching to return to see and experience more after your first visit.

To help you decide your top travel spots, we have collected footage from trips to our favourite African destinations and put together our Safari365 ‘Best in Travel 2019’ video. Take a look at our top picks – including a mix of cities, regions and countries - to visit in 2019:

While Africa is home to a number of fantastic places to visit, we have featured a few of our favourites in Southern and East Africa:

Kruger National Park, South Africa

There is a reason why Kruger National Park is our most popular travel destinations. It is a true adventure into the wild.

Kruger is a premier wildlife watching destination in Southern Africa. This quintessential safari getaway is South Africa’s largest protected wilderness area. Kruger is home to an abundance of wildlife including the famed Big Five. There are a variety of accommodation options, including private game reserves that offer a world-class, secluded getaway, expert guides and genuine African hospitality in a breathtaking environment.

Top Activity:

Enjoy an early morning game drive to watch when wildlife is most active as it greets the day.

Cape Town & Franschhoek, South Africa

Every year Cape Town and the surrounding winelands draw millions of visitors. Nestled at the base of the iconic Table Mountain, Cape Town is a traveler’s paradise. It effortlessly combines vibrant city life, local culture and history, world-class cuisine, and exciting outdoor activities – all set against picturesque coastlines and mountain ranges. Just outside of Cape Town are the Cape Winelands. Towns such as Franschhoek are renowned for being home to a multitude of stunning, award-winning wine farms.

Top Activity:

Make your way to the top of Table Mountain (either by Cable Car or by hiking) for unforgettable views. Afterwards, visit one of Franschhoek’s wine farms to sample some of the region’s best vintages.

One of Africa’s most moving and memorable wildlife experiences is found in the misty highlands of Uganda. A gorilla trek is a true wildlife adventure. There are less than 1000 mountain gorillas left in the wild and these rare creatures are only found in the Virungas Mountains that stretch across the borders of Uganda, Rwanda and the DRC making a gorilla trek a truly unique experience. As a destination, Uganda offers more than just the treks, it is home to beautiful national parks, great wildlife viewing and the reputed source of the Nile.

Top Activity:

Embark on a gorilla trek under the guidance of an expert tracker and witness largest of all primates and rarest subspecies of gorilla in their natural habitats. A truly moving wildlife experience – the effort of the trek is definitely worth it!

Zanzibar Islands, Tanzania

Just off of mainland Tanzania is the idyllic East African beach paradise of Zanzibar.

Zanzibar is a unique African beach getaway. It has all the makings of a classic island destination: tropical weather, palm fringed beaches, warm Indian Ocean waters. Zanzibar offers all of this and more. It is also home to lush spice plantations, indigenous forests and rich culture and history.

Top Activity:

Explore the winding streets of Stone Town; a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is full of intricate Arabic influenced architecture and historic charm.

Botswana is one of the most naturally beautiful destinations in Africa. From the herds of elephants along the riverbanks of the Chobe River and the winding waterways of the Okavango Delta, to the arid wilderness of the Kalahari Desert and the barren expanse of the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans. It is also a haven for wildlife and offers Big Five safari experiences combined with world-class accommodation and a strong focus on conservation.

Top Activity:

Take a trip in a mokoro (a traditional dugout canoe) and watch the wildlife as you meander through the labyrinth of rivers, streams and lakes in the Okavango Delta.

Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

The Serengeti National Park is an iconic safari destination in Africa. The seemingly endless plains filled with wildlife are usually the first image that springs to mind when people imagine a classic safari.   Home to an astounding amount and variety of wildlife and birdlife, stunning scenery, expert guides as well as a range of accommodation to suit all budgets, the Serengeti is popular for both first time and return safari go-ers. A major draw for a visit to the Serengeti is the chance to experience the Great Migration. The massive herds of the Great Migration travel across the Serengeti’s plains on their annual journey in search of fresh grazing and water.

Top Activity:

Witness the impressive scenes of the Great Migration where each year, over 1.5 million wildebeest, zebra and gazelle move continuously across Tanzania and Kenya.

Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe and Zambia

Known as Mosi-oa-Tunya (the smoke that thunders), the world-renowned Victoria Falls are a magnificent sight to behold. The falls are the largest sheet of water in the world and run across the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia. Victoria Falls is a complete destination offering adventure activities, cultural excursions and beautiful national parks.

Top Activity:

The best way to experience the impressive falls is from above. Take a scenic helicopter flight and enjoy a unique perspective of the spectacular falls.
