Balloon Safari over the Serengeti Plains
On a recent trip to Tanzania we were lucky enough to be offered a trip on a hot air balloon ride over the Serengeti with Adventures Aloft Balloon Safaris. What a thrill ! It was a bucket list dream come true and definitely worth the 4 am wakeup call !
On arrival at the launch sight we were greeted by a hive of activity with the balloon being prepared for the trip. We waited excitedly, like children waiting for a treat, and finally the balloon was filled, the safety talk and landing instructions done and like magic we rose off the ground for the start of the hour flight.
And what a flight! We took off from a launch site next to the Mara River, and looked across to the sunrise of the Masai Mara in Kenya. For the next hour we floated weightlessly across the plains of the Serengeti , it’s an experience like none other. While we did not see much game on our trip( besides for Hyena, Lappet Faced Vultures and various Antelope) as we were travelling outside of the best gameviewing season, the sights across the Serengeti were breathtaking.
If you were to ask me if the balloon safari is worth the $500 per person price tag for the hour trip (this does include a champagne bush breakfast overlooking the Mara River), I would have to honestly say, that while I enjoyed every minute of the trip; including the bumpy landing; I would be hard pressed to spend the money outside of the migration period. I can only imagine that when the Wildebeest arrive in full force, the views from the hot air balloon must be awe-inspiring – Price-less.
I must give a huge thank-you to Richard, the camp manager at Lemala Mara for arranging this once in a life time experience.
